Airing the Family Laundry

a Stauffer Design Co. remodel project

There isn’t much to get excited about when it comes to doing laundry, so we had to get creative with this space. We knew color was a top priority and we couldn’t wait to present the idea of a rich blue tone on tone color scheme. This space has so many great uses. Plenty of storage (even some space for kitchen overfill), a private desk for the homeowner, a window seat for taking off shoes and coats, and a spacious mudroom closet for organizing backpacks, lunchboxes, and more.

As we like to do in all of our designs, we wanted to give this laundry room remodel a little flair of vintage and a tiny pop of modern. We brought in the old with the beadboard backsplash and unlacquered brass knobs. The modern vibe was brought in with the quartz countertops and sleek chrome pull down faucet. This space has nicely hidden undercabinet lighting and lots of storage for both laundry supplies and extra kitchen gadgets.

This client loved the idea of a little window seat to complement the mudroom cabinet to it’s right. Functioning as a place to sit, take off shoes, then put them away as well as a place to hang damp laundry, this area really gets a bang for its buck on uses. We simply adore the cafe’ style curtains that we were fortunate to have handmade by this clients mom and they add the perfect touch of coziness to this utilitarian space. We used a very Southern Living inspired brick paver for this laundry room floor made it a little extra by having our tiler install in a herringbone pattern.

Our favorite corner of this room is the mudroom cabinet. The clients wanted this cabinet left open, no doors, so we thought it would be fun to create a little visual interest with a contrasting wood beadboard. The deep walnut stain is the perfect accent to the soft blue throughout the room and the unlacquered brass hooks are the cherry on top. Drawers under the cabinet are perfect for hiding stinky sneakers or hats and gloves.
